Self-Reparenting Theory and
Process for Group Leaders

In this training video, Muriel James leads a workshop on self-reparenting for mental health professionals. She developed the theory and techniques of self-reparenting as a group process to be used in intensive four- or five-day workshops. It has also proven successful in private practice with clients who want to improve the quality of their lives by breaking free of negative pasts. Tested with the use of standardized psychological tests and control groups, self-reparenting is an exciting and successful breakthrough in theory and method. The step-by-step self-reparenting process includes:

• Becoming aware that something important in childhood was not received from parent figures
• Historical diagnosis of negative and positive qualities of your own parent figures
• Learning to dialogue with the Child about its needs and wants
• Evaluating for you what can be done and how to do it
• Contracting for and practicing new parenting skills
• Strengthening the new Parent ego state on behalf of the Child
• Letting go of the past in favor of the present and the future

Muriel James, EdD, is a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst and master psychotherapist, educator, and consultant. She served as president of the ITAA and was the winner of the 1983 Eric Berne Memorial Scientific Award for her work on self-reparenting. She is also a prolific author, with numerous articles and 19 books to her credit, including the best seller Born to Win, which she coauthored with Dorothy Jongeward. She has traveled extensively worldwide doing training and teaching, and her books have been translated into 20 languages.
