Eric Berne's Carmel, California Home
The Berne home was originally built for Davenport Bromfield in 1888 to live in while he mapped out the streets of Carmel. As the oldest house in Carmel, it is on both the State and City Registries of Historic Homes. Eric bought the house in 1948. While it no longer is held by the family, it retains all the warmth and charm of a true "Carmel Cottage". Eric's writing studio, built among the gardens, contained many of his personal items, books, photo albums and hand written notes as well as unpublished papers and manuscripts. Those items are currently being archived for easier access and preservation. While you can no longer stay at the house, you can still take a tour of this enchanting coastal area called the Monterey Peninsula, California's "crown jewel," and acquaint yourself with the places that gave meaning to Eric's life.
